Artists from 2010 that will make 2011 their own

2011 is looking to be yet another tasty year for the music industry.  For any sun hat, rose tint glasses wearing britpoppers still mourning the loss of Oasis, you at least have the reformation of Pulp to keep you going, as well as a brand new album from Blur.  We also have the long-awaited comeback of The Strokes to our iPods as well as our festival line-ups.
But if returning rockers is not what you're after then you might want to start polishing up on this brand new lot, as 2011 could well be their year:

Juan Zelada
Someone that has been hitting up the internet for some time now, Juan has already got himself a cracking little EP, 'Story of Stuff', as well as a great repertoire of songs built up on his site, including the charming 'Breakfast in Spitalfields.  His blend of smooth vocals and soft melodies is incomparable to anyone else.  He also grabbed the social networkers by the privates after his innovative #iconfess got viralled.  With his debut album nearing completion it's going to be a great year for Juan Zelada, a name you better get used to hearing.

Anna Calvi
Having supported Arctic Monkeys at the Royal Albert Hall as well as Nick Cave's Grinderman in Europe you'd forgive Anna Calvi for relaxing and reveling in a fantastic 2010.  But apparently that's not enough, as she is due to release her self titled debut album only 17 days into the new year.  After that she's due in Belgium, France, Holland, Germany and after gracing her homeland with a mini tour she's back off out to the States, all within a month.  With her strong vocals, big sounds and the incredibly catchy 'Blackout' compiling the album it'll be a great way to start 2011.  Oh and she can even put her own style on an Edith Piaf song and make it work.

Chapel Club
Another band who are starting 2011 with a bang are Chapel Club, who release their debut album, Palace, on January 31st, preceded a week earlier by their first single release in the atmospheric 'Surfacing'.  Supporting one of the success storied of 2010, Two Door Cinema Club, they got to play in front of a load of European crowds, something they'll be doing for themselves come April where they'll be traveling to 5 countries in a week.  With their anthemic festival sounds they're bound to be all over the scene in the summer, just don't be surprised if they're billed above their previous tour compadres.

Lanterns on the Lake
Having released 3 EPs in as many years, Lanterns on the Lake already have the kind of internet backing some bands could barely dream of, and that was before they finally put pen to paper on a indie record label, with Bella Union signing them up just 2 weeks ago.  This is a partnership made in heaven, with bands like Fleet Foxes and The Kissaway Trail part of the same family, we know we can expect more of the same from Lanterns, as they won't be asked to ditch their majestic and melodic sounds and just concentrate on what they do best, angelic music.

Camera Obscura
Don't be surprised if 2011 is the year you see the name Camera Obscura at the top of a festival tent's billing.  With their catchy tunes and sing along choruses they're perfectly shaped for festival crowds and would be the perfect accompaniment to sunshine and green fields.  Their fourth and latest album is the best yet, and with songs like The Sweetest Thing still feeling fresh after a year of it's release this band really have the longevity and the consistency to be a festival top-biller for many years to come.  Starting with 2011.

Little Comets
Judging by the amount of listens Little Comets have on their Myspace page you'd be forgiven for thinking they must be a few albums into their careers already.  However they only boast one single release, and that is the brilliant Isles, a national anthem for the indie crowd in the making.  This will of course be on their debut album, 'In Search of Elusive Little Comets' set to crash onto the scene late in January.  Also on the album will be 'Joanna', which is sure to be part of any indie dance floor as much as skinny jeans and checked shirts.

Dry the River
Boasting the range of instruments you'd expect to see on a joint tour of Belle and Sebastien and Arcade Fire, Dry the River manage to produce the sorts of polished sounds experienced, multi-albumed bands could only imagine.  Their rustic and earthy melodies matched perfectly to the beautifully soft vocals make for the highest grade of easy listening.  With festival appearances in Holland already lined up for early in the new year expect to see them bringing their unique tunes to a stage near you.  Glockenspiel and all.

The Neat
With a raw energy that oozes through their recordings, The Neat are rapidly firing themselves into the indie world, and there's very little that's going to be able to stop them.  Two strong singles and videos in, their debut album is due to come out in 2011 and if they follow on from their last single, 'Hips' then the new wave scene is about to be smashed.  It's damn near impossible to listen to their music without at least a toe-tapping.  Think about what the scene will be like when they turn up at Shepards Bush on Feb 21st.  Good luck to Warpaint for having to follow this lot.

Best Coast
It's rare that a band will come out of LA and won't sound like anything else you've heard from there, so I'm guessing that no-one told Best Coast this.  There sounds have sunshine and good times embedded into them, even whilst sitting with the snow streaming down outside.  Another band that have only just released their debut album, it's picking up accolades from both sides of the pond and will ensure that the name Best Coast will be on everyones lips for when the BBQs are fired up and the Pimms is uncorked.  Bottoms up.

Benjamin Francis Leftwich
If there's one name you're gonna have to get used to in 2011 it's Benjamin Francis Leftwich.  With a blistering EP already under his belt and a debut LP due in March Benjamin is more than ready for the heights that he will hit next year.  With extensive touring scheduled and a Zane Lowe 'Hottest Record in the World' title already nabbed, they'll be no escaping him, not that you'd want to after hearing the stunning 'Atlas Hands' for the first time.  And the 100th time for that matter.  And any person that can cover Arcade Fire like he did with Rebellion, is due the upmost respect.  Beautiful music.

So that's what 2011 is shaping up to be with regards to new bands on the scene.  After a year that gave meteoric rises to Mumford and Sons, Laura Marling and The xx anything is possible in the music world.  If you'd have told Florence this time last year that her and her machine would headline a festival mainstage in the summer you would have been laughed off.  Now I dare you to say it to one of these 10..
